|More and more sites can only be accessed with a proxy|
A proxy is a computer system that acts as an intermediate step between a web browser and a web server. The web browser connects to the proxy, and the proxy connects to the final web site on its behalf. Proxies can be used to provide anonymity, speed up access, or circumvent blocks.
Schools often employ proxy systems to block student access to certain web sites such as MySpace or Facebook. Those proxies intercept each web request and pass only the ones to permitted sites. Students often use certain web sites to circumvent these blocks. Such circumventors are a type of proxy.
