EverQuest is a fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that was released in 1999. It is published by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE).
This is one of the original MMORPGs that made the genre famous, and it’s great that we can still play it, for free! However, it’s really showing its age, in particular by the dated graphics and grindy game play. All in all not recommended, except for die-hard EQ fans and gaming historians.
- A lot of PvE content available for free
- Grinding through levels has been made a bit easier by the addition of computer-controlled mercenaries
- Graphics look old, plain and in many cases downright ugly
- Game play and quests are uninspiring, including the old-style dungeons
The BBC reported in 2002 that work done by Edward Castronova showed that EverQuest was the 77th richest country in the world, sandwiched between Russia and Bulgaria and its GDP per capita was higher than that of the People’s Republic of China and India.
(A spectacular quote, based on black market virtual currency to real currency exchange rates, but it sounds like something that wouldn’t stand up to some more serious scientific study).
